Day 43 - Budapest, Hungary

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

This was our day trip to Budapest, home of a bunch of famous people and an important city in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  The Danube splits the city in two, Buda on the hilly side of the river and Pest on the flat side.  The Danube starts in the Black Forest and ends in the Black Sea.  Unfortunately for the residents, Budapest has been destroyed many times throughout its history, usually by foreign invaders, but in 1838 by a flood that wiped out Pest.  So, although there are some impressive buildings such as the palace, there are no medieval buildings to see.

We took a bus and boat tour so we could see the whole city as fast as possible.

Then we strolled through town just checking it out.  It has a huge indoor farmers market, so we got some sandwiches there.

Lastly, we soaked in the largest of the city's 130 mineral baths, inhaling the sulfur fumes and getting the maximum healing effect from the water, along with several hundred Hungarians.  It is a large pool complex with maybe 15 pools of varying temperatures and sizes and it seemed to be a big social event for young adults.  Very few kids, probably similar to the ancient Roman baths.

When we got off the train in Vienna at 10:30pm we looked around trying to figure out which way to go, and we realized that we've been in way too many train stations lately and they all look similar.
